CHANGES TO TOBACCO PRODUCTS SOLD IN AUSTRALIA IN 2025

Australia’s new tobacco laws, which come into full effect on 1 July 2025, will change the way tobacco products are sold, and what they look and feel like for people who smoke.

These changes reduce the appeal of cigarettes and other tobacco products, ensure the harms of smoking are clear, and help make it easier for people to quit.

Resources are available to help people understand and explain the changes.

We invite you to use and share these resources with your stakeholders and networks.

We have recently written to tobacco retailers in all states and territories to provide information on the tobacco laws and the retail transition period.

This letter includes a copy of two consumer-facing posters for display in-store.

What is changing?

In 2025, tobacco products will:

  • Taste and feel different
  • Have different names
  • Be consistent in size, shape and filter
  • Have new health information and support to quit.

These changes:

  • May mean some tobacco products will no longer be available
  • Do not reduce the health risk of smoking. No tobacco product is safe, and all tobacco is addictive

Other new legal requirements also apply, including (but not limited to) on advertising and sponsorship of tobacco products.

More detail about these changes is available at: health.gov.au/tobacco-control.

When do these changes come into effect?

Full compliance with the changes is required by 1 July 2025, but consumers may have started to see these changes in stores already.

What resources are available?

To increase awareness of the upcoming changes, resources and information have been developed for:

Consumers

Tobacco retailers

People involved in the production, supply and sale of tobacco
