MORE than 65 powerful handguns are destined for Melbourne’s underworld after masked armed bandits raided a firearms shop on Monday.

Police confirmed this morning that an audit has revealed the extent of the theft from the High St business.

An organised gang suspected of being behind the raid on O’Reilly’s Firearms in Thornbury, in which four armed robbers, one carrying a gun, stormed in just after 11am…..”

It is a timely reminder about ensuring that security protocols are refreshed where needed, communicated  and understood by all  staff in stores.

In the lead up to the busier Easter period it is time to again give security thought and attention.

The safety of staff and customers is paramount. We deal with petrol theft and robberies on an all too frequent basis so we should not be complacent and assume that its just a way of doing business.

There are personal costs associated with any  incident and we seek to avoid these and at least minimise harm to all people.

Consider:

  • Loss of work time in the event of an injury
  • Disability claims
  • Worker’s compensation expenses
  • Medical expenses
  • Hiring and retraining costs in the aftermath of a worker injury
  • Financial losses to the business just to name a few areas of consequence

Ensure that:

  • All security equipment is working and correctly connected.
  • CCTCV is working and recording
  • Staff are aware of your company procedures
  • Petrol theft policies and procedures are understood and acted upon
  • Racks, shelves and other displays should not be cluttered and should be kept tidy to aid visibility throughout  the store
  • Cash handling procedures are followed and minimal cash should be available at POS

These are just a few areas to focus on. Contact your local Police Crime Prevention Officers for more specific information.
