The new cashierless store will get you lunch in seconds.
SAN FRANCISCO – Lunch just got faster in San Francisco with the soon-to-open cashier-free store, Zippin, KGO-TV reports. Customers download the Zippin app on their smartphone, then use the app to scan a QR code upon entering the store.
Overhead cameras and sensors keep track of the items each customer grabs, noting the item’s price. Once a customer completes shopping and exits the store, the app charges the customer’s account with the products selected.
Cofounder and CEO Krishna Motukuri said the system speeds up transactions, making a foray into the store to grab lunch a mere 16 seconds or so. The store will open in September.
“Just the lines, I think the biggest issue is time, the checkout lines are long,” said one potential customer who enjoys the convenience and speed of lunch at Eatsa and other technology-driven retailers.
Motukuri isn’t in a hurry to expand Zippin to other locations. This location will serve as a concept store to sell artificial intelligence technology to other merchants. “The amount of hardware costs that is needed to deploy our solution is far lower than other solutions that are available in the market,” he said.
More convenience and fuel retailers are moving into frictionless transactions, includingRicker’s, Sainsbury’s, and Shell and GM.
