Victorian crime spikes by eight per cent

Victoria’s crime rate jumped more than eight per cent in 2016, a new report reveals.

Recorded crime statistics show there were 552,005 offences recorded by Victoria Police last year, up 10.2 per cent compared to the same period the year before, according to a Crime Statistics Agency report.

The increase means an offence rate of 9,119.0 per 100,000 of the population – or a rise of 8.1 per cent from 2015, according to the report.
