Following the state-wide rollout of the NSW Digital Driver Licence, Service NSW is committed to supporting licence checkers in their awareness and readiness to accept the Digital Driver Licence.
The NSW Digital Driver Licence is now available state-wide
From Monday 28 October, regulation came into force allowing all NSW drivers to legally present their Digital Driver Licence as proof of age, proof of identity and right to drive.
The state-wide version of the Digital Driver Licence is now available to download on the Service NSW app. On Sunday 3 November, the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and the Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello officially announced the state-wide rollout of the NSW Digital Driver Licence.
Since the regulation came into effect on Monday 28 October, there has been over 600,000 downloads of the NSW Driver Digital Licence, with 97 percent of customers giving it the thumbs up. You and your businesses may already be being presented with the Digital Driver Licence by customers all over the state.
Licence checkers need to be aware that customers are no longer legally required to carry their plastic licence as they were during the trial of the Digital Driver Licence. However, the NSW Government is continuing to urge customers to carry their plastic licence to avoid inconvenience as awareness and acceptance of the Digital Driver Licence spreads.
Updates to reference materials
The “How to Check” Digital Driver Licence quick reference guide was recently updated. The previous guide stated an expired or suspended driver licence could be accepted as proof of age and identity. While this is the case for some industries, a number of other industries are not able to accept an expired or suspended driver licence as proof of age or identity due to their industry regulations. Service NSW has updated its “How to Check” guide to reflect this, and recommends following industry or organisational protocols.

Important to know
Customers are not required to hand over their device to the licence checker. If a licence checker cannot view a customer’s Digital Driver Licence they should ask the customer to adjust the tilt of their device or turn the devices brightness settings up.
Copying a licence
Licence checkers that need a copy of a customer’s licence must continue to follow their existing process using the plastic card. A copy solution for the Digital Driver Licence will be available early next year.
