When police pulled over a Hiace van travelling south on the Hume Highway, they thought they had merely nabbed a lead-foot driver.
But an inspection of the van revealed an illegal tobacco cache, worth about $200,000.
Benalla police seized more than 1000 cartons of cigarettes, believed to be from overseas, when they booked a 22-year-old Sydney man about 9.40am last Saturday.
He was allegedly caught driving at 130km/h in a 110km/h zone outside Benalla, about 190 kilometres north of Melbourne.
The man was charged with two counts of possessing and conveying imported tobacco, possessing a prohibited weapon and lastly exceeding the speed limit.
He was granted police bail to appear at the Benalla Magistrates Court on April 4.
