Research identifies survival factors for franchisees and small business operators

New research identifies factors that contribute to and hinder small business success – for both franchised and independent small businesses.

The research, conducted by the Centre and funded through an Australian Research Council Linkage grant with the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, and Franchise Council of Australia, compares surviving and failed small businesses during uncertain economic times in Australia from 2010 to 2012.

The research revealed failed business owners did not attribute economic uncertainty as being any more detrimental to their businesses than did survivors, instead identifying 14 factors that influence business success rather than economic conditions alone.

The research team included Centre Director Professor Lorelle Frazer, Centre Deputy Director Associate Professor Scott Weaven and Centre Researcher Professor Debra Grace.
