PRESIDENT TRUMP DECLARES ENERGY EMERGENCY, ISSUES ENERGY-RELATED POLICY DIRECTIONS

The new administration charts a path toward greater energy exploration, less regulation.

Following his inauguration on Monday, President Trump has declared a national energy emergency. The order was invoked under the National Emergencies Act and, according to The Hill, directs the heads of federal agencies “to identify any emergency authorities they may have to facilitate the production or processing of energy.”

The order also includes other directives, including “telling the head of the agency to consider issuing emergency fuel waivers that allow for the year-round sale of gasoline that contains high ethanol content,” The Hill reported.

Another executive order, “Unleashing American Energy”, contains additional energy-related policy directions. Among them:

  • It encourages energy exploration not only on federal lands but also waters.
  • Seeks to terminate EV mandates by encouraging a withdrawal of waivers to allow such mandates and orders agencies to review whether to eliminate EV subsidies.
  • Orders review and potential repeal of all regulations that might burden domestic energy development.
  • Repeals a number of climate-related executive orders.
  • Stops any more disbursement of NEVI or other funding for EVs until a review of those programs is completed.

During his inaugural address Trump said, “America will be a manufacturing nation once again, and we have something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have—the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth and we are going to use it.

We will bring prices down, fill our strategic reserves up again—right to the top—and export American energy all over the world.”

Reuters reported that the energy emergency declaration, along with other executive orders, “signal a dramatic U-turn in Washington’s energy policy after former President Joe Biden sought for four years to encourage a transition away from fossil fuels in the world’s largest economy.”
