Between 800 and 1000 litres of petrol was stolen.
IN A theft reminiscent of a scene from a Mad Max movie, thieves have sucked 1000 litres of petrol from an underground tank in Melbourne’s north east.
Police are hunting for the sneaky culprits who struck a small Ivanhoe mechanic Ray Molloy Motors, stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of fuel sometime between 6pm on Thursday, November 12 and 8.15am the next day.
Heidelberg police constable Michael De Felice said police understand between 800 and 1000 litres of petrol — more than $1100 worth — was stolen from the Lower Heidelberg Rd small business.
Constable De Felice said thieves smashed flood lights on an awning at the mechanic shop before setting in for the long haul.
He said police believe thieves the lid at ground level and used a powerful pump to extract the fuel which is stored a few metres underground at the site.
Anyone with information is being urged to contact Constable De Felice on 9450 8000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
