Cost of Living Editor John Rolfe and One Big Switch’s Lachlan Harris explain how you can join the latest moneysaverHQ campaign to get cheaper prices at the pump.
AUSTRALIANS are about to slugged by the fuel excise but now they have the chance to fight back.
A new campaign, The Big Petrol Switch, is launching this week and aims to unlock group-discounted petrol by scoring Australians a better deal at the bowser.
Australians fork out an average of $60 per week on fuel and have been hit by astronomical price rises over the past decade when filling up.
SAVE MONEY: JOIN THE BIG PETROL SWITCH
News Corporation Australia together with One Big Switch is running this latest campaign and will use people power to unlock a group discount of 5 per cent.
It aims to aggregate at least $1 million dollars worth of petrol buying power to score a 5 per cent discount for consumers and bring the cost of petrol at $1.60 per litre down by 7.5 cents per litre.
One Big Switch co-founder Lachlan Harris said the cost of living pressures had put more strain on families and the fuel excise was another blow to peoples’ hip pockets.
“Families have been absolutely flogged by rising petrol prices over the last couple of years, the prices have almost doubled since 2002,” he said.
“At a time when the tax is going to actually increase we want to reduce or reverse the impact of that by unlocking a group discount on petrol.
“It’s a reality, families have to face up to it., we want to reduce the impact of the excise increase.”
From August 1 motorists will be slugged an extra 0.5c a litre for petrol due to the reintroduction of fuel excise indexation.
To fight the rise, Australians can register and be a part of the campaign by visitingwww.onebigswitch.com.
They will negotiate a group discount on a prepaid petrol card.
If a group discount is unlocked details of the offer will be offered to registrants.
Signing up is obligation free and registrations close on midnight on Sunday, June 22.
