RETAILERS have welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to lift trading restrictions on the retail industry.
The NSW Government today announced changes to retail trading laws so shops previously unable to open their doors on Boxing Day can share in economic benefits of the renowned shopping day.
The Australian National Retailers Association (ANRA) says the changes will allow retailers to meet the needs of local shoppers.
“It was a ridiculous notion that people from Penrith would have to travel to the CBD in Sydney to bag a bargain,” ANRA CEO Margy Osmond said.
“In 2012, for the first time, they will be able to shop at home, meaning local stores can be open and participate in what is a great holiday shopping tradition.”
Smaller retail outlets, those outside the CBD or in regional areas have previously been prohibited from Boxing Day trading.
Ms Osmond said the new laws would allow bricks and mortar business to compete with online retailers.
Minister for Finance and Services Greg Pearce said the reforms were a win for shoppers and will boost the NSW economy.
“All retailers in NSW will now have the opportunity to trade on what is one of the biggest shopping days of the year,” he said.
Boxing Day will remain as a public holiday with penalty rates applicable for workers but employers will not be able to force employees to work.
“The changes will ease shop trading restrictions and cut red tape – providing opportunities for more jobs and the potential for greater earnings for shop employees,” Mr Pearce said.
Under the changes, NSW bank branches will also be able to open on the August bank holiday.
