Automated foodservice platform will serve hot sliders in 2 minutes without traditional kitchen staff or infrastructure.
Murphy USA customers will have the chance to buy a White Castle burger from some of its larger-format convenience stores. The burgers won’t be served by a human, though—they’ll come from a robotic restaurant in a box.
The autonomous foodservice platform, developed by Automated Retail Technologies, will launch featuring fast-food hamburger chain White Castle, El Dorado, Arkansas-based Murphy said Thursday.
- Murphy USA is No. 4 on CSP’s 2026 Top 202 ranking of convenience-store chains by U.S. store count.
The initiative was driven by customer insights that highlight demand for convenience, high-quality food options that fit busy schedules, quick trips and on-the-go occasions, Murphy USA said.
The test will also allow Murphy USA to evaluate how autonomous foodservice can enhance the customer experience within its existing operating model and store footprint. The platform allows Murphy USA to introduce hot, branded food without the space, labor, infrastructure and complexity associated with a traditional restaurant or full commercial kitchen, the company said.
“We’re continually evaluating opportunities that create additional value for our customers while building on the strengths that have made Murphy USA successful,” said Scott Woodward, Murphy USA senior vice president and chief merchandising officer. “This relationship allows us to introduce a new convenience offering informed by customer insights, while maintaining the operational discipline and focus on everyday value. We’re encouraged by the opportunity to drive incremental inside sales, traffic and basket growth.”
Customers place orders through a touchscreen interface and receive hot food in about two minutes. Automated Retail Technologies’ technology automates preparation, heating and delivery within a self-contained system.
Automated Retail Technologies has already opened a White Castle automated kiosk at Boston Logan International Airport in 2025 (pictured above). This version sells four types of ready-to-eat sliders. Sarasota, Florida-based Automated Retail Technologies also works with other foodservice providers for its kiosks including Sodexo and Wow Bao.
“At White Castle, we’ve spent more than a century finding innovative ways to bring our Crave to customers wherever they are,” said Audra Mazzeo, vice president of retail sales at Columbus, Ohio-based White Castle. “This partnership creates a unique opportunity to meet customers during their everyday routines and deliver the White Castle experience in a way that is convenient, fast and incredibly tasty.”
At the end of the second quarter of 2026, Murphy USA had 1,659 Murphy USA/Express stores and 147 QuickChek stores for a total of 1,806 convenience stores.
