CUOMO ORDERS HEALTH PROBE, NEW WARNING SIGNS AS VAPE CRISIS GROWS

Reuven Fenton and Nolan Hicks September 9, 2019  New York Post Gov. Andrew Cuomo demanded New Yorkers put down their e-cigarettes and other vaping devices Monday after federal health authorities reported an outbreak of mysterious illnesses tied to the popular devices left hundreds hospitalized across the country. “This is a frightening public health phenomenon,” Cuomo said. “Common sense says that if you don’t know what you are smoking — don’t smoke it.” The three-term pol made the remarks as he sat in front of an all-caps sign that read, “Vaping can expose you to toxic chemicals and kill you!” and laid out a new plan to more tightly regulate vaping products sold in New York state. State regulators will require bodegas and other stores that sell vaping devices and cartridges post warning signs identical to the one at Cuomo’s Midtown press conference. Cuomo also said the state Health Department has launched a…

US billionaire Bloomberg pledges $160m to fight vaping

Agence-France Presse   11 September 2019 Billionaire and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday announced a $160 million campaign to ban flavored e-cigarettes in the United States following a spike in vaping deaths. At least five people have died in the US recently after vaping in an outbreak that has sickened hundreds with severe pulmonary disease and left several teenagers in induced comas. “This is an urgent health crisis, and tobacco companies are behind it,” said Bloomberg, a long-time anti-smoking activist who banned smoking in New York bars and restaurants when he was mayor in the early 2000s. “We know Big Tobacco’s playbook. We’ve seen this before. It is targeting kids — and putting them in serious danger,” he added in the New York Times op-ed co-written with Matt Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Bloomberg denounced the inaction of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and…

Melbourne petrol stations set to close: Caltex selling seven sites

Nathan Mawby 11 SEP 2019 Herald Sun One of the nation’s biggest fuel providers is selling off seven Melbourne petrol stations to developers. The sales by Caltex will shut bowsers from Pascoe Vale to Frankston, and they have plans to dump even more sites early next year. The Melbourne properties are among 25 the fuel giant is selling off nationwide, and expected to drive developer demand with prominent addresses and large allotments. Sources close to the sale have tipped bowsers to stop pumping late this year, or early next. Suburbs set to lose a petrol station are Forest Hill, Box Hill, Brunswick East, Clayton, Frankston, Carnegie and Pascoe Vale. Heart Foundation warns vegan products are packed with salt

FINBAR O’MALLON SEPTEMBER 11, 2019 AAP When reaching for that meat-free alternative in the supermarket, you would be forgiven for thinking you were picking a healthier option. But a new study has found popular vegan products are packed with salt, with some containing up to half-a-day’s worth in a single serve. Nutrition experts are now urging the industry to set salt targets for meat-free meals. Medical researchers at The George Institute surveyed 190 products in 2019, exposing their salt contents in a report jointly published by the Heart Foundation on Wednesday. Meat-free bacon — or “facon” — was among the worst offenders, containing more than a third-of-day’s worth of salt. Falafel and meat-free sausages came second and third for the highest average amounts of salt. But one vegan pie contained an eye-watering half of the daily recommended salt intake. Eating too much salt is linked with high blood pressure and…
