MAJOR MILESTONE IN AUSTRALIA’S CLEAN ENERGY JOURNEY WITH VE GEELONG HUB.

Today marks a major milestone in Australia’s clean energy journey with the launch of the nation’s first publicly accessible renewable hydrogen refuelling station at the Viva Energy Hub in Geelong.

This groundbreaking $62 million project, officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Victorian Minister Lily D’Ambrosio MP, is more than just a station—it’s a bold step toward a zero-emissions future for heavy transport.

Powered by a 2.5MW electrolyser using recycled water from Barwon Water, the station will support a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)—including prime movers, buses, and waste trucks.

The site also features ultra fast charging for commercial EVs, bringing together hydrogen and electric technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of Australia’s medium and heavy vehicle fleet.

With strong support from foundation partners—Toll Group, ComfortDelGro Australia (CDC), Cleanaway Waste Management, and Barwon Water—and funding from ARENA, this project is a shining example of collaboration driving innovation.

Viva Energy Chief Strategy Officer, Lachlan Pfeiffer said, “By providing hydrogen as an alternative fuel, we are aiming to reduce emissions and contribute to the development of a more sustainable heavy transport sector in Australia.”

This is just the beginning as Viva Energy is actively engaging with more partners to expand hydrogen adoption and explore broader market opportunities.

The future of energy is here—and it’s happening in Geelong.
