Gelato Messina’s second Melbourne store is all set to open on Swan Street. The Richmond gelati shop will swing open its doors at 5pm on Thursday, June 11, and will offer more than 30 classic flavours, nine types of cakes, and rotating weekly specials. This includes two new permanent flavours: macadamia crunch, and coffee and hazelnut praline. The latter is a gluten- and dairy-free sorbet, which owner Declan Lee has been testing for six months.
“A lot of people eat dairy-free these days and are looking for new things, so we’ve replaced the lychee [flavour] with a chunky coffee sorbet, which is really quite a hard flavour to make,” Lee said.
The new store is designed so that passers-by can watch the cakes being prepared and the gelato being churned behind the windows.

“We’ve gone a little bit mid-century. We’ve got a nice stone wall and older furniture and nice cabinets,” Lee said.
Gelato Messina’s other Melbourne store is in Fitzroy, and there are seven stores in Sydney, and outlets on the Gold Coast and in Las Vegas.
