Increased tobacco tax will represent a new low in revenue raising

If a further 25 per cent tax increase on tobacco is introduced, as Health Minister Tanya Plibersek has refused to rule out, it will represent a shameful new low for a Government no longer even attempting to disguise its grab for revenue. Worse still, according to the Australasian Association of Convenience Stores (AACS), it will ignore the real heart of the smoking issue – health.
