They say one person’s trash is another’s treasure, and this might be the case.
People are now earning up to $2000 getting their hands dirty as they rummage through rubbish bins looking for cans and bottles which get them a 10c refund.
The Return and Earn scheme rolled out in December and since then Australians have returned 607 million drink containers, with $54 million handed back, Daily Telegraph reported.
Some residents have said they have been able to pay for family holidays with the money back scheme.
One resident who did not wish to be named, said that by making $2000 a week he was able to take his family on an overseas trip.
Despite the effectiveness of the program, residents are venting their frustration at the mess being left behind after their recycling bins have been rummaged through.
In response to this, Labor environment spokeswoman Penny Sharpe said that people should seek permission from the bin’s owners before searching for their gold.
She stressed that if people did not ask for permission then it would result in a huge mess.
The Environment Protection Authority is also urging those who sift through people’s garbage to be more considerate of their neighbours and not litter.
It is believed the recyclable scheme has seen a jump in prices for soft drinks, beer and bottled water, which in turn has left consumers $200 million out of pocket, Daily Telegraph reported.
