Seven locations affected; undetermined if customer info was compromised.
ANKENY, Iowa — Casey’s General Stores Inc. confirmed credit card skimming devices were discovered at six of its locations in Nebraska and one store in Iowa.
Skimmers are devices criminals illegally place at the dispenser point-of-sale, often in hopes of stealing customer credit card and debit card information.
Skimmers were found at the following Casey’s locations:
4150 W. U.S. Highway 30, Grand Island, Neb.;
705 2nd Ave., Kearney, Neb.;
15275 Weir Plaza, Omaha, Neb.;
11200 140th St. Pl., Davenport, Iowa;
13941 Highway 6, Waverly, Neb.;
108 W. 8th, Wood River, Neb.; and
115 E. Nobes Road, York, Neb.
Upon discovery of the first device, Casey’s launched a companywide examination of all fuel pumps at its nearly 1,900 convenience stores in 14 states, which led to the discovery of the additional devices. Casey’s immediately removed the devices, alerted authorities and instituted companywide pump inspection procedures at all stores.
“We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our customers and will continue to work with federal, state and local authorities in this investigation,” said Casey’s Chairman and CEO Robert J. Myers.
According to Casey’s, it is undetermined if any customer credit card or debit card information has been compromised. The Ankeny-based c-store retailer encourages customers who used credit cards during the periods of Oct. 2-10 at the Nebraska locations and Oct. 15-21 at the Iowa location to “remain vigilant and closely monitor their financial accounts and credit reports.”
Customers are also encouraged to contact any of the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and Transunion, to purchase a copy of their credit report and obtain information about fraud alerts and security freezes.
