The ACCC is already looking at BP’s planned $1.8 billion acquisition of Woolworths’ fuel business and is now also considering blocking BP’s planned purchase of three regional airline fuel depots from Viva Energy.

The regulator said it would decide next February whether to allow the regional deal, which includes Bankstown in NSW and Bundaberg in Queensland.

Viva owns the old Shell retail fuel business in Australia, including the sites operated by Coles and some 55 regional airports.

Last week BP asked the ACCC to defer consideration of its Woolworths deal pending further negotiation on the number of sites to be included in the sale list in order for the deal to be approved.

BP was to buy 531 sites from Woolworths but up to 100 may need to be sold to clear the deal.

The aviation fuel decision is a separate issue.
