Australian convenience stores have overcome challenging retail trading conditions to record an encouraging set of results for 2012. The sector recorded sales growth of 3.4% in 2012, according to the latest State of the Industry Report unveiled by the Australasian Association of Convenience Stores (AACS), compared to grocery sales growth of just 2.3% for the year.
It was the first time since 2008 that the convenience channel grew at a faster rate than the grocery channel, said AACS Chief Executive Officer Jeff Rogut.
“Throughout 2012 the convenience industry was faced with many challenges including price aggression and the increased cents per litre petrol discounts offered through the major supermarkets. To record merchandise sales growth of 3.4% in the wake of these challenges was a solid result and testimony to the efforts of our retailers and their suppliers to reinvent their offer,†Mr Rogut said.
