DoorDash, a food delivery giant from the United States, is rolling out its first New Zealand service in Wellington on Wednesday.
Local merchants including Mama Brown, The Ramen Shop, 1154 Pastaria, A Taste of Home, Zany Zeus, and Boneface Brewing had signed up to get their food delivered to people in Wellington, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt.
Alongside cafes and restaurants, a number of retailers offered groceries and convenience items through the app, said Rebecca Burrows, DoorDash general manager in Australia and New Zealand.
Customers would also be able to order from national and international chains including Hell Pizza, Tank Juice, Nando’s, Subway, and Burger Wisconsin.
DoorDash was launching its New Zealand operations in an area with a vibrant and exciting food scene, she said.
It began advertising for New Zealand workers earlier this year, and was expected to offer cheaper fees for restaurants compared to UberEats, Delivereasy and Menulog.
Couriers on the platform included stay-at-home parents, students, small business owners, and others who need supplemental income.
“We’ve had a strong response from locals looking to earn some extra income through deliveries with DoorDash,” Burrows said.
The platform operated in more than 7000 cities, including in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and Germany.
The app would also begin delivering to Porirua at a later date.
The company put “significant focus on being a positive force in the local community and local economy”, she said. DoorDash listened to merchants and its delivery drivers, and had customer support to help with any issues.
The company was also looking at how it could support community food providers.
New customers would get 50% off their first two orders and no delivery fee for their first 30 days.
The food delivery service launched in Australia in 2019, where it had more than 40,000 local drivers.
