COLES has again defended its aggressive pricing strategy as it uses its loyalty scheme to launch a fresh salvo in the supermarket wars.

The retail giant yesterday unveiled plans to revamp the scheme by offering more points on purchases and allowing members to get discounts on some products of their choosing.

Coles chief Ian McLeod said the overhaul was designed to help the group carve out a greater market share.

It was unveiled yesterday, ahead of rival Woolworths’ third-quarter sales announcement today.

Coles parent Wesfarmers will unveil the supermarket group’s sales figures on Tuesday.

Analysts tip price deflation as likely to stymie growth in third-quarter sales at both supermarkets.

Wholesaler Metcash this month said the supermarket price wars were drumming independent corner shops out of business.
