Retailer anger grows over ‘botched’ NSW CDS scheme

AACS has been critical of this scheme and the lack of governemnt communication and lead times since its inception. The government in NSW has not listened and now others are starting to object as well.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has reportedly asked Premier Gladys Berejiklian to delay the introduction of the controversial Return and Earn scheme. Sources have told The Australian that “Nationals ministers are hopping mad about the new scheme.” The news comes as NSW government MPs scramble to avoid a backlash from consumers and retailers over the scheme, which officially begins today.   The government has failed to roll out enough of the reverse vending machines and collection points in time and has also offered scant information on the scheme to those affected.  There are currently only 43 venues to collect containers in all NSW regional areas and not enough collection points in metro areas. Outside of Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney and Wollongong there are just nine collection points for the 26 towns with populations between 15,000 and 78,000. Shooters and Fishers MP for Orange Phil Donato told The Australian that there wasn’t a collection machine in his electorate, despite people now pay $4 to $5 more for a carton of beer to fund the scheme. The government says a collection point will be rolled out in Orange in the coming weeks.
