McDonald’s has hinted it could start delivering to homes in Britain.

The fast food giant suggested the service could made available in the UK, the US, Canada, France and Germany – its five biggest markets.

The topic was mooted as the chain set out its long-term growth plans, partly centred on the “rapid increase in delivery”.

Bosses said 75 per cent of people in its top five countries live less than three miles from a McDonald’s branch – which suggested it was capable of delivering hot food direct to the doorstep.

At the moment, McDonald’s brings burgers, fries and milkshakes to customers in China and Singapore but said it hoped to become “the global leader in delivery”.

The company said it wanted to become the “global leader in delivery”

It said: “Because of our extraordinary footprint, McDonald’s is uniquely positioned to become the global leader in delivery.

“One of the most significant disruptions in the restaurant business today is the rapid increase in delivery.

“Coupled with the explosive growth in third-party delivery companies, the landscape has created an exceptional opportunity for growth.

The company pinpointed its delivery success in China to fuel suggestions it was looking to replicate the service worldwide.

The statement continued: “McDonald’s is already one of the largest providers of delivered food in the world, with annual Systemwide delivery sales of nearly $1billion across various markets including China, South Korea and Singapore.

“China has tripled its delivery business since its launch in 2008. In 2016 alone, China’s delivery business grew 30 per cent.”

McDonald’s said it wanted to capitalise on emerging technology as it battles against disappointing sales figures.

The company has had 500 million fewer transactions since 2012.

It also announced plans for a mobile order and pay platform in 20,000 American restaurants to allow customers to order and pay for their food on their smartphones.
