Cadbury’s classic bar has lost its position as the best-selling confectionery in convenience stores
Chocolate news: Maltesers is now the most popular brand sold in the high street
Move over Dairy Milk, you’re no longer the nation’s favourite high street chocolate treat.
Cadbury’s Classic bar has lost its position as the best-selling confectionery in convenience stores.
Taking the throne is the underdog Maltesers.
Yes, those chocolate honeycomb balls have gone down a treat with the people of Britain, according to a new report.
Sales of Maltesers in convenience stores soared by £2.6 million to £49.7 million in the past year.
Meanwhile sales of last year’s winner the Cadbury Dairy Milk plunged by £8.8 million to £44.6 million.
Data from analysts IRI shows that chocolate sales are worth £1bn a year to the convenience channel, a decline of 2.1% from the previous year.
The report says that the 16.5% fall in sales by Dairy Milk follows wholesale chocolate price increases by brand owner Mondelez.
“It comes after Mars introduced bar format Maltesers Teasers in March 2013,” Martin Wood, head of strategic insight-retail at IRI UK told Confectionery News.
“Mars as a manufacturer has always been strong in the convenience channel so it is no surprise that this channel is showing strong growth for them.”
